Friday Night Teaching

.

Good evening from Scotland,

.

As always I hope this message finds you well and if you’re visiting our Website for the first time this evening, then a very warm welcome wherever you might be.  My name is Steven Birnie and I’m an associate Pastor in our local Church here on the North-East Coast of Scotland and besides family, work and church work, we operate this Blog which is a part of our Online Christian Bookshop.  This is our fourth year live on the Worldwide Web and it’s been quite a journey so far and a lot of work and this Blog Page has been no exception, I thoroughly enjoy posting articles for our regular and visiting readers and all the hope is, is that we add to your Christian life, through the working of the Holy Ghost, to help bring you closer to God and in your relationship with your Lord, Saviour and best friend, Jesus Christ.

.

Our Friday Night Article has become a regular feature of our Website and I’ve had the pleasure of sharing some important

Emily and I having a wee snooze

sermons on this Blog, some of which have been preached publicly like the one I’m about to share this evening but first, I just wanted to let our readers who know us quite well now, that we just celebrated Emily’s second birthday today and what a day it’s been.  We have a very large extended family and a smallish house so we’ve been packed in like sheep for most of the afternoon but Emily clearly enjoyed herself and it was good to see everyone in one place for a time.  Thank you to those who came along, it wouldn’t have been the same without you.

.

So onto tonight’s article which I’ve titled “how do you overcome sin in the Christian life?”.  This was a sermon I preached two Sundays ago and strangely enough it remains very clear in my head and the reason being, was because I was so overcome with passion when it came to sharing this most important subject.  Things got a little loud however Sharon assured me that Emily and Baby David didn’t seem too bothered at all seeing their Daddy preach so loud and I was glad to put it across in the way that it should be. This subject is also one of the main Chapters of our main EBook Package, The First Principles and Oracles of God, so hopefully this article will have a dual purpose this evening in giving an encouragement as well as a short preview into our EBook so, I do hope this will be a great article for you this evening.

How do you overcome sin in the Christian life? – The Great Grace of God!

.

Below is the full sermon note chapter of our main EBook and the notes I used to preach the sermon on the above subject.  Please take these very short but pointed verses and explanations step by step and I’ll see you again at the bottom……

“The First Principles and Oracles of God and Growing in Grace”

EBook and Audio Sermon Accompaniment

EBook Excerpt – Grace and Law

.

Before moving on to examine the Growing in Grace teachings time must be taken to first examine Grace itself. Establishing the Principles of Salvation, the work and function of the Holy Ghost and the Grace of God will give a sure foundation for growth in Christ. Without these being understood, growing would be fruitless and lead to much misunderstanding and error.

.

Grace – The divine unmerited favour of Almighty God. The expression of God’s goodness toward the undeserving and his riches bestowed upon the sinner at Christ’s expense. (Ephesians 2:8) “…..by grace ye are saved through faith: and not of yourselves………it is the gift of God and not of works………….” Grace is part of the very basis of Christianity; men who deserve hell inherit heaven.

.

The Law – Given to God’s people, The Children of Israel in the Old Testament, given to reveal the righteousness of God and social and religious requirements of the people. This was a temporary design until the coming of Christ and served to show forth sin and death.

.

Jesus Christ concerning the law

.

(Math: 5:17) “…..think not that I (Jesus) have come to destroy the law but to fulfil…….” What Christ meant by this was that by his life and works on earth he would obey every command, precept and law in thought, word and deed from his birth to his death. By doing so Christ would do what no man could do, fulfil the old law to satisfy God and bring in a new agreement. For this law to pass away someone had to carry out the above, live a perfect, sinless life and sacrifice himself so others could receive the great favour of God by a new and living way, through his grace.

.

(Rom: 7) “……..for that which I do I allow not, for that what I would that I do not, but that what I hate that I do………..for the good that I would, I do not, but the evil which I would not that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no longer I that sin but sin dwells within me….oh wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from this body of death?……”

.

Explanation in brief: Keeping this explanation simple, what Paul was saying was that because he was still flesh and blood (this body of death), when he brought himself under the law, the law did exactly what it was designed to do, show up sin and death.

.

(Rom 7:11) “…..for sin taking occasion by the commandment (the law) deceived me and slew me……….”

.

So if we put ourselves under any law sin will revive.

.

YOU ARE NO LONGER UNDER THE LAW BUT UNDER GRACE

.

Illustration: “….an unsaved person is driving to church and all the way along the road there speed-limit signs, she breaks the law more than once and is charged accordingly under the law. She gets to church, gets saved and leaves to go home, suddenly all the speed limits are gone, the police are there but they have no law book there to charge her with…”

.

(I’m not advocating breaking the law of the land here, it’s just an illustration)

.

For us now like the woman, we have no law written against us therefore when we sin our sins cannot be imputed against us. Christ fulfilled the law on our behalf to set us free, sin cannot be imputed where there is no law!

.

(Rom 6) “…….what shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound, God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein………………”

.

Paul wrote the above verse because he knew what the natural conclusion would be that we can sin and get away with it, which is half right. “…….how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein………..” What Paul was saying was why on earth having been set free from sin would you go back to sin seeing what it did.

.

So where does this end, lawlessness? No this ends in the words of our Lord Jesus Christ.

.

“……IF YOU LOVED ME YOU WOULD OBEY MY COMMANDMENTS…….”

“………for my commandments are not grievous………..”

.

We may not be under the old law but we are as believers under a new and living way, the Law of Love in Jesus Christ, not now because we have to, because we choose to.

.

———————————————————-

.

Hello again, how did you get on and more importantly did you see the formula?  How do you overcome sin in the Christian life? The answer is actually so simple that we sometime look past it thinking it can’t be this easy but it is.  You see Paul knew the formula, he knew what human nature was like, what the purpose of the law was and how impossible sin was at time however, Paul by revelation of the Holy Spirit, learned exactly how to overcome the sin which was in his and our body, by recognising one of the most important aspects of the Cross, the fulfillment of the Law.

.

You see Jesus, among many other aspects, was called on our behalf to live his life in a sinless state from his birth to his death, every moment of every day, in thought, word and deed so that he could do what no man could do, fulfill God’s Old Testament Law, bring it to a close and usher in his New Agreement between God and man, his Grace.  Now you might be saying that you already know this but lets look at one the things Paul had said in the sermon notes above……

.

(Rom 7:11) “…..for sin taking occasion by the commandment (the law) deceived me and slew me……….”

.

Look at the above a little more closely before we move forward, sin, taking it’s occasion (taking advantage of the Law) deceived

me and slew me.  Before you can ever take on sin as a Christian you must see how sin comes up within ourselves and the above is the answer, by law.  You see when you put yourself under a law like a tradition or an incorrect teaching, a law has now been presented to your mind and the sin which is within you, takes advantage of this and as Paul said, it killed him (spiritually).  Sin comes up by the Law.

.

I heard a great little story just after this sermon in fact and the person told me of a hotel in Spain which is built on the sea-shore which is rich in big fish and to stop the residents from fishing, they posted up “STRICTLY NO FISHING”.  The more signs they put up, the more visitors fished from their balconies so, the man had an idea, he took down all the signs and made no mention of this law and you know what, no visitors ever fished from the windows again.  I hope from this little example you can see what Paul was talking about, sin dwells within us, Paul said so – “it is no longer I that sin but sin that dwells within me”, when we put ourselves under law sin will revive within in us and will pull us down spiritually.

.

How many Christians have put themselves under law and are struggling with sin when Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf? Jesus said I didn’t come to destroy the law but to fulfill, Paul said SIN CANNOT BE IMPUTED WHERE THERE IS NO LAW.  The law against you Christian has been removed, there is no law book against you now, you are free and NOT being judged according to the old law as before, there is no handwriting written against you.  God is not judging you, he isn’t pacing up and down angry at you, he isn’t rolling his eyes and beating his fist, he LOVES YOU.  Jesus did it, he took away the law which we could never have kept and replaced it with a law we could, “to love each other as I have loved you” but you’ll never walk in the ways of God if you don’t understand and live this first, God IS NOT judging you.

.

Who taught you God was judging you, WHO took a pulpit and laid laws on you which Jesus never preached? Who on earth is teaching God’s Children anything else other than the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ by his Blood!!!  Friend Jesus set you free from the law – SIN CANNOT BE INPUTTED WHERE THERE IS NO LAW – the old law is gone and the new law comes forth, the law of love in Jesus Christ.

.

God looks down upon you with NOTHING BUT A SMILE ON HIS FACE, oh he may chastise us from time to time or correct our

ways but his smile, his face and his favour is NEVER removed from us!!! So if Emily disobeys me, does something really bad would my favour come away from her life, would my LOVE CEASE FOR ONE MOMENT, TOWARD MY LITTLE GIRL, no, not even for a moment, so why on earth would God turn his face from you.

.

Friends we need to stop allowing the enemy to drag us into his courts of rules and regulations, telling us of the sin within which God is already aware of and tell him, I AM SAVED BY GRACE AND THERE IS NO LAW WRITTEN AGAINST ME TO CHARGE ME WITH, YOU MAY BE UNDER LAW BUT AS A CHRISTIAN, I AM NOT!!! How dare a child of Christ be taught that God ceases to smile upon his true child, lift his favour from his child, HOW DARE IT BE SAID!!! HOW DARE IT!!!  Men preaching a half baked gospel desiring to be teachers of ‘laws of Jesus’ neither knowing what the teach nor what they affirm, HOW DARE IT. Christian, God has no variableness in him at all and his favour upon you has never changed.  He may bring us through trials, he may take us down roads we don’t know but he NEVER LEAVES US NOR FORSAKES US. We are free, we are under no law setting us free to live our lives for our Lord Jesus Christ!!!

.

(….the capital letter portions of this article are pointed words aimed at lies and the enemy not at our dear Christian reader….blessings…..)

.

Friends we need to see this, we need to live this, look at Paul’s battle in his flesh in the verses above, his Titanic battle with the sin within, but he’d learned how to overcome, to not bring himself under any law which contradicted the true law of our lives, the law of love in Jesus Christ.  Stop bringing yourself under laws, worldly laws and they are easily done! “oh not another Monday, I can’t wait till Friday, I must stick with this diet, I must read my Bible, I must pray every day….”, every time you bring yourself under a law, sin takes advantage and drags you down.  God isn’t putting you under grievous laws, we are – Jesus said that his commandments were not grievous!  Doing things God’s way gives us life but the only way to walk in the ways of God is because we choose to not because of some law in our lives otherwise we’ll fail.

.

You need to say to yourself, I AM UNDER NO LAW, GOD IS NOT JUDGING ME BY THE OLD LAW, I AM FREE!  Do you know what God’s Word actually tells us about his Grace?  That when we sin God is actually more Gracious towards us not less because he knows it’s only by his kindness, that we’ll repent and change our ways not by PILING A HEAP OF LAWS ON US!.

.

Christian we need this, I need this, if Paul needed to remind himself then so do I and so do you.  I want to live my life for Jesus but the only way I can is from a place of FREEDOM not law, bring yourself out from these laws and stop allowing the world, the devil and your flesh have any more say! You”ll find that when you have no law wriiten against you to read your bible everyday or pray three times a day, you’ll find that you’ll easily read your bible everyday and pray everyday, because you’re free.

.

Boy oh boy, getting a little bit carried away, maybe it’s time to settle down a bit.  Christian….God’s Word assures us that sin cannot be inputted against us where there is no law, he isn’t judging us anymore but showing us Grace and it’s that Grace, it’s that Love that gives us the strength to become more like Jesus and set us free from the power of sin. Oh friend, he loves you, how many times have you heard that but how many times have you said “I am under no law, I am totally free in Jesus, God will change my life”. Does this mean we enter into hyper Grace teachings, start doing what we like when we like? no…..Paul basically said, why on earth having been set free from the law and from sin would you go right back to doing things in the old ways?  Why would you, knowing that you are actually free and enter back into the ways of sins? You have the remedy to sin, his Grace, YOUR SINS CANNOT BE INPUTTED AGAINST YOU !!!

.

I’m really hoping this article is doing it’s job tonight because my wee hands are shaking and the ends of my fingers are getting a bit sore hammering this keyboard.  Grace is the remedy, it always has been, it’s always been right before you but there’s a difference between knowing and talking the teachings and the actual living of it in your daily life.  God wants us to be so free, so unbound by the ways of this world and dare I say it, the religious Christian, to live our lives and become more like Jesus Christ in character and in action because friend if we don’t, our own areas have no hope.  Do we preach “you have to come to church” or do we preach the Good News of the Gospel, that Jesus died to set us free from this world, from sin and, from the law.

.

God bless you tonight and I pray, so earnestly, that God by the power of his Holy Spirit will light up his Word to you about this essential subject.  Hope you enjoyed….

.

Further verses to consider….

.

.
